A variety of services
There are many companies who will take you under their wing in Réunion. Would you prefer tandem paragliding on the west slopes, over the summit of Maïdo, or above the cane fields where the soft green shades evoke the turquoise lagoon? Do you want to try out paramotoring or hang gliding at sunrise or sunset, to feel at one with the elements? Or would you rather enjoy the thrill ride of tandem parachuting, living the eye-opening experience of watching the beauty of Réunion from the sky? The islands natural sites are so magnificent that it’s hard to choose what to do. Many sporting events organisers have made the right decision: in 2013, the Paragliding World Cup took place in Réunion.
The huge geographical diversity, ranging from coastlines and mountaintops to desert plains and dense forests, mean it can often be difficult to realise the extent of Réunion’s natural beauty. Ancient volcanic eruptions and the collapse of magma chambers created three mountains: Cilaos, Salazie and Mafate. And that’s without mentioning the volcano, Piton de la Fournaise, one of the world’s most active volcanoes. This slumbering giant’s ill humour is much-talked about by the Réunionese in tones of respect, and often produces spectacular lava flows which run down to the sea, watched by astonished locals and visitors alike.
It is by standing atop Réunion that you can see how the island is organised around its cirques and its volcano, giving its landscapes such beautiful variety. The vertiginous heights of the slopes, cirques and mountain peaks (Grand Bénare, Maïdo and Piton des Neiges which stands at 3,071m), the sombre stretches of forests transformed into national parks with protected ecosystems dwelling within natural reserves, and the green, lush plains which stretch up to the turquoise lagoon surrounded by a coral reef, before plunging into the deep blue of the Indian Ocean.
Helicopter companies offer an hour-long flight to truly take in this stunning spectacle, bringing visitors to the island’s key sites in record time. The lunar plains of the volcano, giant waterfalls and rifts in the cirques can all be discovered close-up. The feeling is even more intense in a microlight. Accompanied by a pilot and supported by a light frame, you feel like a seabird wheeling carelessly through the blue sky. These airy activities take on a supernatural feel faced with such magical, natural beauty.
