The volcano plays solo. Piton de la Fournaise erupted on 2nd April 2020 at 1pm (local time) for the second time this year. This proves again that Piton de la Fournaise is definitely one of the world’s most active volcano.

For the first time in memory, no one will be cheering. In this period of confinement #stayhome is the watchword to adhere to, as per the Préfecture de la Réunion.

The Volcano Observatory of the Piton de la Fournaise (OVPF) observed a resumption of the swelling of Piton de la Fournaise and the return of seismic activity, on Thursday morning 2nd April between 08.15 am and 08.51 am (local time).  A volcanic tremor was localised on the east side and within the enclosure.

Given these conditions, the Prefecture decided to implement warning phase 2-2 "eruption in progress in Enclos Fouqué" of the ORSEC* volcano plan today Thursday 2nd April 2020 from 1pm (local time)  and is taking strict confinement steps.

Get ready for your next trip to Reunion Island. Admire the Piton de la Fournaise show from the comfort of your home.
