In 1860, faced with the inflow of labour, and in order to protect the island from epidemics, the colony built a large quarantine site: Lazaret de La Grande Chaloupe. Located in a deep, isolated valley, and easy to monitor and control, the Lazaret became, for thousands of people, their first place of stay in Réunion.

From 1860 to 1865, at La Grande Chaloupe, a landing place, dormitories, a hospital and a number of extensions were built not far from the coast on either side of the ravine. They have been known since then as Lazaret No.1 (La Possession) and Lazaret No.2 (Saint-Denis).
The last workers to be quarantined at Lazaret were Rodriguans, who arrived in 1933. In 1946, Le Lazaret became the property of the Departmental Council of Réunion, and it would eventually open to the public in 2008.

The Lazaret No.1 is open for free visits and guided tours from Tuesday to Friday from 9 am to 5 pm.
Booking is recommended for groups. Free admission. Accessible to persons with reduced mobility.
