A vestige of the past in which the ""Ile Bourbon"" had to satisfy its own needs for salt, the Saint-Leu salt works at La Pointe au sel was brought back into service in 1996 after being abandoned in the 1970s.

Owned by the Conservatoire du Littoral (French coastal protection agency), the Musée du Sel (Salt Museum) is associated with the salt marshes which are situated on the Pointe au sel site.
