A fourth Travel d’Or award for Reunion Island, elected the best French destination in 2021.
After winning three Travel d’Or titles in 2012, 2014 and 2015, Reunion received yet another trophy in the 2021 awards which took place on Thursday 8th July.
In the finals alongside New Caledonia, Nouvelle Aquitaine, Brittany and the islands of Guadeloupe, Reunion Island took first place in the “French destinations” category at these 12th world travel awards. A noteworthy presence at the event was that of the Secretary of State for Tourism, Jean-Baptiste Lemoyne.
After being postponed twice because of the health crisis, the Travel d’Or ceremony which rewards businesses in the tourism industry, was able to go ahead at the Pavillon Gabriel in Paris, in the presence of some 300 professionals from across all fields of travel expertise.
From 4th February to 3rd March 2020, the people of France were invited to cast their votes to determine the winners among the digital brands competing in 11 different categories. In all, 380,000 votes were counted. Following the voting, five finalists were named in each category, except for the “Influencer” category. For each category, the winner was then designated by a team of two members of the Travel d’Or 2021 judging panel.
As a reminder, Reunion Island won the 2012 Travel d’Or innovation award in the “applications and tablets” category for the 360° app, the 2014 Travel d’Or for the favourite travel website among internet users in the “tourist office” category, and the 2015 Travel d’Or for its website, again in the “tourist office” category. These previous victories led Frédéric Vanhoutte, CEO of Eventiz and creator of the Travel d’Or awards, to call Reunion the “geekiest destination when it comes to communications tools”.
