5 breathtaking photos of Piton de la Fournaise

Capturing a magical moment

The atmosphere on Reunion Island is not just dictated by the seasons but by the whims of Piton de la Fournaise too. Sometimes explosive, sometimes considerate, it lights up and shapes the island. So each scene becomes unique and impossible to predict. The volcano is a never ending source breathtaking images, which can sometimes seem quite surreal.

Here is a selection of the five most impressive photos of Piton de la Fournaise.

An explosion of colours

When the sun rises, it throws incandescent light over Plaine des Sables. The atmosphere changes, the night blue is replaced by a sky the colour of fire. The volcano, impassive, leaves it to the sun to set the horizon ablaze. Unbelievable colours look like something straight out of a sci-fi film. But these intense colours are actually really.

Welcome to Reunion Island.

Walking on the moon

Going to Piton de la Fournaise, is like leaving the earth’s surface. The combination of ashes from past eruptions along with the volcanic rock have given it a lunar landscape. We wonder whether we shouldn’t swap our hiking boots for a space suit.

Admiring the lava fountains

These natural chimneys are soothing and fascinating in equal measures. The Piton de la Fournaise lava fountains can project lava up to 100 metres high. To see this glowing red ballet, you often have to do some walking. Lava fountains and flows are sometimes also visible from the Lava Route, on Grand Brûlé. At night, the show is even more impressive. Bring warm clothing and a flask of coffee and enjoy the ultimate experience. At dusk, the eruptions fill the sky with colour and the spectacle is quite incredible.

Journey to the stars

Climbing Piton de la Fournaise is a like a journey to the stars. As you follow the path by the light of your head torch you will be transported to another universe. The night sky glows with the light of a thousand stars, far away from any light pollution. Together, they sparkle and light up the volcano. You are on the roof of the world.

Don't go like that !
