  • At 500 metres altitude, the site of Grand Etang consists of a large lake surrounded by bluffs known as the Mornes de l’Étang. The origin of this natural lake is a lava flow that dammed Annette River. Grand Etang’s protected location makes it home to many species of nesting bird. It is not uncommon to see Reunion harrier there, known locally as papangue, the island’s only bird of prey.
