  • Hauts-Sous-le-Vent forest is the main natural tamarind plantation on the island, with some remarkable hundred-year-old specimens. This huge forest stretches over more than 8,200ha, at an altitude of between 150 and 2,900 metres. The climate here is rather original as it is a cool and cloudy place, with low rainfall. It is home to the Bois de Nèfles and Bois de Sans Soucis biological reserve, one of the very last remains of the indigenous mountain forest of the western highlands.
